What is the truth about rabies shots for humans? - rabies shots

When I was a kid, there was a "myth" about 14 shots in the stomach when you rabies .... Today I have the news of a little boy was with a number of injections per week and are very painful. Does anyone know exactly what to do if you suspect being bitten by a rabid animal. What kind of shot is that why it is so unbearably painful, and how many shots do you need?
